This country did the best it ever did following FDR's social changes empowering the middle class. Strong unions make for a strong middle class. Social security was a godsend FDR rammed through. If the middle cass is doing well, everyone does well. But the right wing, especially starting with Raygun has been dismantling unions (and the middle class) and giving as much power to the rich and corporations) as they can. The spread between rich and poor has widened for 30 years. Dems do want to redistribute the wealth from rich to middle class to make it fair again.
