February 4, 2010
dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com

Banco Santander, the biggest Spanish bank and one of the largest in Europe, reported a solid rise in year-end profit Thursday, helped by growth in Brazil and Britain and a turnaround at its U.S. unit, Sovereign.

The lender said its fourth-quarter profit was €2.2 billion, or $3.1 billion, up about 13 percent from the same quarter in 2008. For the year, it posted a profit of €8.9 billion, second only to the results of 2007, before the financial markets crashed.
