Ted, my first-generation Ford Taurus needed transmission work after 85K miles. After looking through web sites, it seems that generation had lots of problems with the transmission.

I don't recall that making national headlines, even though the Ford Taurus was the best selling car at the time.

The Prius problems are only getting attention because the spotlight is already on Toyota. Big deal.

TM is getting national attention because this is out of character for them......they typically don't have recalls.....and because they are doing a poor job of getting on top of the problems.....probably because they typically don't have recalls. Had they jumped on the problems asap they wouldn't be getting all this attention.
