A lot of the themes and ideas that the GOP could use to win back the moderates, are the same themes that are important to the Tea Partiers. For example restraint on the growth of government and the deficit, attacking earmarks, rejection of the 2000 page Health Care bill monstrosities. A GOP that's a "me too but a little slower" party doesn't really give anyone a reason to vote for it. It lost both the tea partiers and its share of the moderates, by losing its conservative principles.
