It generally takes years to qualify for Social Security Disability, and you can't qualify for welfare programs as long as you have assets. For example, at one point I was told that my medical condition could qualify me for SSI, but not if I had total assets exceeding two thousand dollars.

Essentially, you have to go broke before any of these safety nets kick in.
