I wan't sure because you said "that gets her Medicare" like maybe you were just assuming she might qualify.

She has Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security disability. She had surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. After surgery she still couldn't ice cakes.

Would a cake icer even have paid in enough to qualify?

She worked in a supermarket bakery. It was a union job. I think it paid well enough. She had other duties typical of bakeries like counter work. Before she was a cake icer she was a bartender. And all her life she has been an "operator" so she would be more likely than most to successfully wangle benefits. She was in her forties when this happened, if I haven't totally lost track of the timeline.

I'm somewhat familiar with the Social Security Disability system and what it takes to get into it, or at least I was 15 or so years ago.

And I'm totally unfamiliar with it. All I bring to the table is one anecdote--my cousin. She also has diabetes but that's not disabling. And she's also very obese, which is somewhat disabling now but wasn't a couple of decades ago when she was approved for SS disability.

Dunno. Anyway, my point was only to compare scenarios in terms of justification for public support.
