You expect that if we become tougher negotiators (if we join the club, as it were), others will be forced to pay higher prices. Maybe to an extent... hard to tell.

I think in a situation when most purchasers are national governments (or fully owned "government subsidiaries"), it is no longer a "free market". All those decisions - how much to pay for meds, etc - are already being made on the level of government bureaucrats. We may be heading towards a situation when fundings for pharma R&D will be agreed upon at international forums, or maybe at the UN.

Doesn't sound too promising. Like with most government projects, we'll probably either under - or overfund... with the political classes of many nations lining their pockets in either case.
