there is going to have to be sustained heavy investment for decades before we arrive at the renewable energy golden age. So shouldn't renewable energy effort be spent on basic research aimed at acheiving revolutionary breakthroughs i/o enforcing mandates and temporary tax credits to force adoption of things that aren't economical on their own now? The mandate / tax incentive approach has given us a major corn ethanol industry we can't get rid of and we keep making bigger. That's even now creating an industrial scale wood pellet industry. If it was just a matter of acheiving economies of scale, corn ethanol would be a major success.
