Because they don't. Both parties are equally responsible for the debt on the books. In addition, today's $1.4 trillion deficit was caused by Bush and the GOP. The deficit was on a $1 trillion run rate before Obama ever took office.

The only way we'll get the deficit under control is to slash spending on the top two programs (health care and the military), as well as increasing taxes. I know that the GOP will not allow cuts to the military and nor tax increases. In addition, the GOP has not shown much interest in cutting health care spending. So this country is dead in the water when it comes to deficit reduction until the Dems and GOP can come together on a compromise to solve the problem.
