I watch/read the MSM as well, but

1 - They are not authorities who can simply settle an issue by their say so. "The MSM says X", doesn't imply "X".

and

2 - They did not generally say "we are facing a new great depression", perhaps "worst since the great depression" (which it was in some ways, but not in others), but that's a very different thing. The war in Iraq had the most US military deaths since Vietnam, but that doesn't mean it was anywhere near Vietnam. The same could be said about Vietnam and WWII.

Also

3 - Facing a very bad situation, doesn't imply that deficits of this magnitude are warranted, or even helpful.
