Wow, tough letter. I have to say from the many friends serving in the submarine service I know, very few care one way or the other about the change in policy. Since being a submariner is such a close quarter’s situation underway, it doesn't take long to identify one or two gay sailors on each boat. As long as they're good at doing their job, most just accept it.

Of course, it's never been openly paraded before. So, I'm not sure how the guys will handle that. Probably just tease the guy mercilessly if he's open about being gay. One of the attributes in being a submariner is being able to take teasing and being able to dish it out.

I once heard a psychologist attempted to do a study on submariners by getting underway on deployment and was driven nuts within a month from the mental harrassment. With that kind of culture, if a homosexual is mentally tough enough and good at his job, he'll likely be accepted rendering the policy shift meaningless.
