wife's family has a family temple in fujian province, common for large families of locally prominent state

in the temple is a stone tablet inscribed with a poem, and each generation is supposed to take the next word of the poem as middle name

in order to keep the family temple going, through war and peace, some members of the family must do better than most, else, as the chinese would say, "the candle at the temple goes dark"

we are on the 26th words of the poem (loops back to the start of the poem when all words are used)

it is not about control, as only american control freaks would surmise

but about family values, a concept actually foreign to most americans
