Internet2 is a University led coalition that wants to simplify and speed up the Internet via the GigaPOP concept. It does not specify any specific technology, but does use OC12 (622mb), OC3 (155mb) and DS3 (45mb) links in its initial rollout.

Will this impact commercial products? In general Internet2 uses commercial products - but is involved in many vendor field trials and will provide lots of product design input.

Will routing still be viable? It will always be viable - it will just migrate from processor based to firmware assisted over time...

As far as use of experimental technologies for optics - you may be thinking of NGI (Next Generation Internet). This is a whole other project that lacks funding at present. However, if it takes off you can bet cisco will be involved :-)
