I think Palin will be pivotal in the 2012 election only because she will split the Republican vote. I'm guessing that she will not be embraced by the Republicans as their nominee and will represent a third party candidacy. In effect, she will become the 2012 version of Ross Perot. Ironically, history will repeat itself and this split of the conservative vote will permit another Clinton to be elected in 2012.

What ever would make you think that I have an "irrational" fear of Palin? I told you...dems are salivating at her involvement in the mnidterms, let alone the 2012 presidential election. Your second paragraph, I agree...is certainly a possible scenario, particularly if the GOP fails to unify behind a single moderate candidacy...problem is the "tea party" will have to swallow hard and fall in line...unclear if they will do that.

Once those seeds are sewn she will announce her candidacy for the Democratic primary contests and will handily defeat a President whose poll numbers will be considerably lower by that time.

I am not sure that there is a process by which a sitting president can be denied the defacto Dem nomination. But i could be wrong...in any case, your far out extrapolation calls for clairvoyance...there 's a long time between now and 2012 and a lot can happen between now and then. We should be concerned with the midterm election which is far more important to the near future of the country.
