Put it this way, Tim. I'd bet on this thread, we'd both agree that eating lots of transfats could dramatically increase the probability of heart disease. The science is pretty clear on that point. However, if tomorrow the big political debate became about banning transfats in all foods across the US, how long do you think it would be before the big food companies and fast food chains start spending billions on advertising, fake science reports, and propaganda aimed at discrediting the science behind the link between transfats and heart disease?

I'd bet within 5 years, the American population would be so confused by the mix of reports and soundbites on the news, that most Americans would think that transfats weren't bad for them. I'd also bet that you'd have over-zealous scientists on both sides of the issues cooking up data to prove their points and there'd be great media fed scandals on the so-called fake data they uncovered.

That's what politics does to science. It corrupts it and makes it impossible for laymen to understand what direction to go in. That's too bad, because our policies should and need to be informed by good science.
