A few years ago an LA friend who is an architect sent me an article telling about all the new residential projects getting built/rehabbed in downtown LA. When I lived there, I was always amazed at how moribund downtown LA was given that its the second largest city in the country. It had very few market rate or luxury units. Most of it was affordable housing. That was very much in contrast with the much smaller MPLS from where I moved which has a much more vibrant downtown. As I read the article, I was struck by the overbundance of units getting built.....it was like they were trying to make up for lost time over the prior 3 decades. I also was surprised that there were no new offices proposed....after all, offices beget workers who need apts.

Well I just read an LA downtown blog.....most of those residential structures are now in foreclosure and the bloom is off the downtown rose. And that is so very typical of LA. Eventually downtown LA will become more active but its birthing will be tortured.
