Its the dollar amount that has THE PEOPLE all upset

If the economy was a 100 times as large and defense spending doubled in real terms, and went up by more than that in nominal terms, I doubt people would be twice as upset or more.

The percentage of the GDP is the correct way to measure the difficulty of meeting the burden. The percentage of government spending is a good way to measure how much the government is making it a priority. Both have greatly decreased.
