I tried to drive in to work today, but got stuck on my court. I got myself out, but I noticed snow and ice on the next street. If my car (rear wheel drive, low profile high performance tires) wasn't so bad on snow I would have continued, but instead I turned around and went home.
I've walked around outside the house, but haven't driven anywhere for quite awhile now. On top of that I had a pipe leaking and the plumber couldn't get in right away so I went close to a week with almost no water service (I'd turn it on every couple of days for a short time).
Its really nice to get the water back full time now. And I'm glad my electricity mostly staid on (my house is all electric so I'd have no heat if it was down). There where two or three "blinks" and one outage of about a half hour. (Which could have been a lot longer if a guy on my street wasn't really on the ball. He called the power company, they said they didn't know where the line was down and it could be some time before they could fix it, he found the spot where the tree had taken out the power line, and gave them the pole number, and it was back on within twenty minutes).
But I really can't complain too much about being stuck in the house, or even losing the water -
My sister was without power for three days (with only the fireplace for heat, fortunately they had a lot of available wood.).
Other people where stranded on the road for a long time, others lost power at their house for longer than my sister did. Also some buildings collapsed from the snow on the roofs (I specifically heard about two houses, two firehouses, a church, and a supermarket, but it was probably more extensive than just that.) |
