Wonderbread - My "news" is a moderate reaffirmation of our long term investment case.

800mhz auctions.

Legal Challenges rebuffed and apparantly are totally over. Looks like issue is totally closed.

NXTL the major buyer spending about $14 mm so far out of total spending of $22mm. NXTL is picking up spectrum at pennies per pop. The initial figures were $0.017 per pop. Paying a little more in later rounds but still pennies. They aren't buying enough pops to really impact intrinsic value significantly but it isn't insignificant either. Remember, PCS players bid $15 per pop and more in their auctions. The consensus seems to be that as they acquire spectrum that allows them to have "contiguos blocks" their long term functionality of products and features increases. From Bloomberg, "The 800 mhz auction should allow Nextel the opportunity to acheive parity with cellular and PCS operators in terms of both contiguous frequency as well as in the licensing model used for regulatory purposes" quoting Nextel spokesman Ben Banta.

Further from Bloomberg, "(The company) doesn't need contiguous band of spectrum now, yet it might if the company decides to switch later to different wireless telephone technologies."

Just a guess - C McC has more plans than we know currently for the spectrum. Geo Weiss was right again! McC is building a DIGITAL NETWORK, not a souped up walkie talkie system. Features of this network will change and improve as technology and customer demands dictate. My guess is we will see lots of enhancements and changes in 1998 & 1999 as this new contiguous spectrum is put to use.
