GOP: Jamming health care bill via back room deal would make a mockery of the President's desire to have 'bipartisan' and 'transparent' dialogue By: Susan Ferrechio Chief Congressional Correspondent 02/12/10 3:20 PM EST House GOP leaders on Friday sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., asking them to refrain from passing a health care reform bill via back room dealmaking or by jamming it through the senate with just 51 votes instead of the standard 60 vote supermajority. The letter, signed by House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Conference Chair Mike Pence, R-Ind., reminds Pelosi and Reid of President Obama's Feb. 25 bipartisan health care summit. "The existence of any kind of back room deal among the White House and Democratic Leaders would certainly make a mockery of the President's stated desire to have a 'bipartisan' and 'transparent' dialogue on this issue," the letter states. The letter cited media reports that Obama is hoping to go to the summit with a deal already worked out between House and Senate Democrats so they can move on a bill as soon as the summit is over, presumably by passing a bill with 51 votes. "To ensure we can move forward in good faith, we ask that you publicly disavow these reports and assure the American people that Democratic Leadership is not putting together any kind of back room deal or plotting any kind of legislative trickery to pass it," they wrote.
