The thing that is likely to tip global warming to the extreme mode is all the methane that is locked up in permafrost and in the polar ice areas and beneath the oceans. If a good chunk of that methane goes from solid state to gaseous state, then we're in a heap of trouble. I think we would survive as a species, but it would be some crazy times as whole regions become flooded with seawater. The flooding of New Orleans in 2005 might be one of the first indications of what is to come.
