DEBT PANEL TO BE CREATED: President Obama will sign an executive order for a deficit commission on Thursday and name Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson as co-chairmen.

From a White House official: “On Thursday, President Obama will sign an executive order establishing the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform and announce that former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former Republican Senate Whip Alan Simpson will serve as the commission’s co-chairmen.”

The official notes that Obama was forced to create this commission by executive order "after seven GOP senators flip-flopped and voted to kill a bipartisan legislative proposal to do the same thing." — Carol E. Lee (5:40 p.m.)
