"I don't believe it is a populist party"

It is populist in the sense of the forces it is tapping. Populism has little to do with numbers, it is all about being mad as hell and not taking it any more. And it can be a very powerful engine for change.

The Tea Party is a real danger to the Republican party. If they really are going to try to take it over from a grassroots level, I don't see how the Republican party can survive. As you point out, most Americans are nowhere that extreme. And the problem with populists is they are extremely ideological. So there is no room to compromise, it is their way or the highway. Which is why all of the movements eventually burn out. Because, while it is true that there are some things that can't be compromised, if you take the attitude that nothing can be compromised you paint yourself into a very small corner.
