Read my lips: No new taxes on the middle class

Two months before he was elected president, candidate Barack Obama made an unequivocal promise to voters at a campaign stop in Dover, NH:

<<< “I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.” >>>

If you’re having trouble keeping up with President Obama’s evolving position since then, including the president’s recent admission that he is now an “agnostic” on tax increases, Americans for Tax Reform has this handy list. It’s full of Clintonesque equivocations and excuses from White House staff members and advisors fumbling as they try to explain why “any form of tax increase” doesn’t really mean what you think it does.

Not only did Obama himself insist last September that the forcing people to buy insurance coverage they didn’t want was not a tax, ATR estimates that his new budget “will raise taxes on American energy companies by $8.5-12 billion by 2020,î which of course will eventually be passed on to middle-class consumers in the form of higher prices.

Call it what you will, the middle class will pay a lot more under Obama’s health and energy policies. Isn’t this exactly what Joe the Plumber tried to warn us about?
