Recently, we've heard that Microsoft is stepping up their campaign against software piracy. Coming soon, is a Windows Update that will cause your computer to "check-in" with Microsoft every 90 days. If your system is running a pirated copy of Windows, you'll get a black desktop and some warnings.

For anyone who feels they just can't wait for this intrusion, they can get it now by visiting microsoft.com

The whole process, downloading, installing, and running the check took less than a minute on my mid-level computer.

After your system passes, you're given an opportunity to download a trial version of a few games or Microsoft Security Essentials.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. Psssst! Pirates may want to "hide" update KB971033.
