From the article, here is reason enough for prohibiting 3rd party multitasking on the iPhone if you're attempting to make a device that is intuitive and easy for just about anyone to use: It also increases the system's complexity, as users will now be forced to monitor and manage the processes running in the background. What critics and naysayers don't realize is that one of the biggest (yet most subliminal) attractions of the iPhone and eventually the iPad is their simplicity/ease of use. I guess when Apple figures out a sure-fire intuitive way for the user to manage the concurrently running apps he's opened (but forgotten about and then wondered why his iPhone is slowing to a crawl and the battery is draining in double time), it will lift the multitasking embargo. Until then, the carpers should get over it or buy some other phone. -we-
