MOSCOW, Oct 10 (Reuter) - Western oil companies, with billions of dollars of investments tied up in Kazakhstan's booming energy sector, will be watching Friday's political machinations in Almaty with more than a hint of anxiety.
_ Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev accepted the resignation of reform-friendly Prime Minister Akezhan Kazhegeldin, putting in his place political ally Nurlan Balgimbayev, who is head of state oil company Kazakhoil.
_ Kazhegeldin's eclipse will be a blow to foreign energy investors, as he was the driving force behind this year's high-speed sell off of some of the former Soviet republic's most enticing oil riches.
_ And both Balgimbayev and the Kazakhoil empire he heads are unknown quantities to many oil executives.
_ ''Any change in a personality-driven political system like Kazakhstan's is a cause for nervousness,'' said Julian Lee, oil analyst at the Centre for Global Energy Studies in London.
_ ''Foreign oil companies felt they could do business with Kazhegeldin, so any change will make them apprehensive.''
