The reason, is that the 60's was the highest level of intellectual behavior, this country, and indeed the world, ever experienced. This can be evidenced by the fact every major university in the country (world) and many cultures were bubbling cauldrons of exisential awakening; and by the fact UC Berkeley was the headquarters (one of the toughest universities in the world to get into, with among the best students). One would expect an existential revolution to be led by the best and the brightest, as it would make sense they would understand the complex concepts of existentialism and attendent philosophies like Zen, first. The left never went through a period of anti intellectualism. For a very simple reason. The left has been supplanting mankinds cultures of myth, with a culture of reason for centuries and that requires education.
