"The purpose of man’s life . . . is to become an abject zombie who serves a purpose he does not know, for reasons he is not to question."

Purpose is not always what it first appears. Not many scientists a century ago would have declared a purpose of wolf packs is to benefit the wandering herds, and it certainly doesn't appear so to the casual observer. Now it is common knowledge that predatory beasts contribute to the health of the herds.

Who among us over the centuries ventured into a pursuit of pleasure realizing our efforts would bring short term gains resulting in long term losses. Not many aforehand.

The nature of human beings compells virtue, which on the surface appears fruitless. Is living a virtuous life good because scripture commands it, or does scripture command it because it's good?
