"A significant part of the hippy movement was back to the Earth, get off the technological treadmill." I never liked that part! Also, apathy killed our wonderful space program, that, and the continual whining that why should we spend so much on that when we have people starving here on Earth? Yet, in the future when our society is studied as Rome is now, we'll be remembered for getting to the moon and the atom bomb. It looks like we'll be the Lief Erikssons of the future - the misguided schlubs that got there first and couldn't see the value in pursuing it.
