I come at it from a different angle by considering how much insurance would cost on an item and the number of years it would take to equal the value of that item. For a $400-500,000 house with 2,000/yr insurance it would take 200 years to "save" 400K. Very few of us can absorb a 400-500K loss without feeling it. But on the other hand, I never take a service contract knowing that most problems with an item occur within the first year, usually while the warranty is still in effect.
After my cars reach a certain age, I drop collision insurance.
