Early on before I became a career employee, we were expected to be at the job site before our eight hour day started, which meant that we had to leave the cook shack early and travel up to an hour to get to the place in the woods where the job was. Later, that ethic was done away with and our day started on schedule.

Still later we got flex time, which is very handy and does make a certain amount of sense. You can avoid the rush hour and get work done before people start bugging you.
