I wrote to the Chancellor last week and received this message from his office yesterday.

February 18, 2010

I am writing to acknowledge your email to the University of California, Irvine’s chancellor about Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren’s speech on February 8th. We appreciate your concerns and want to thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

UC Irvine subscribes to the highest principles of academic inquiry and discourse. We strive to be, in all things, a values-based community. Those values include respect, fairness and civil discourse. The campus also provides a forum for the free discussion of the tough issues facing our world.

As it has done in the past, the university will work diligently to ensure the right of free speech is protected for everyone at the university.

The Chancellor has made several public statements on this matter which you can read at www.vcsa.uci.edu/FreeSpeech. Updates will continue to be available at that web site.

Thank you again for your input and consideration of this issue.

Sincerely,

Ramona Agrela
Associate Chancellor / Chief of Staff
University of California, Irvine
