Because Domestic Partnerships or civil unions are not the same as marriage. It boils down the the fact that our Federal Government does not recognize them. This means that many employers will not give gay couples the same benefits that they'd give a hetero couple. In addition, if you form a civil union or domestic partnership in a state that allows it, then it may not be recognized in other states. For hetero marriages, they are recognized in every state. It's not really about demanding that churches give them marriage, rather, it's about getting exactly the same rights that hetero couples get in all areas of the law...employee benefits, taxes, hospital visitation rights, you name it. That is why it is so important to gays to get Federal recognition of civil unions. That way, they can carry those right anywhere in the US.
