My agency had nine regions. I retired from Region 10.

There was no Region 7.

There were many attempts to consolidate Regional Offices and reduce their number, but it is politically impossible.

So they consolidate Ranger Districts, which is absolutely the dumbest thing they could do. People who work on Ranger Districts have to be intimately familiar with the land, and once you get over 100,000 acres it's very difficult. The travel gets hard too. They just stay in the office instead of going out like they should.

I worked on two adjacent districts which were well over 100,000 acres each. I knew every road, every acre almost. After I left they combined the two and hired a deputy ranger, which is the most useless position in the entire organization.
