do you know that you effectively have no freedom to do so?

Certainly I do. Not that I would ever give up my US citizenship, but were I to choose to do so, no one can stop me so long as I'm not attempting to avoid a tax obligation or arrest for some crime that would render me a fugitive, as well as requiring me to lie on any application in my newly adopted country (they don't want US criminals either).

Just because it's intentionally made difficult so there's no doubt about the seriousness of the action, doesn't mean one doesn't have the freedom to do so.

Citizenship SHOULD be difficult to obtain, if only to avoid the apparently "mercenary" mindset you seem to possess.

I don't many countries would make it easy for you to just stop being abandoning your mother country for another.

And I see nothing about an "exit tax"...

As for "mom and dad", they probably wouldn't want to see their traitorous son anyway.. ;0)

But overall, I don't see much difference between renouncing US citizenship and renouncing your citizenship to China:

But just think, if you were "really free" you wouldn't require citizenship or loyalty to any country..

But you'd probably need to hire some Ghurka bodyguards.. ;0)

Welcome to reality.
