Absolutely. But that is a developer conundrum. And an issue that will have to be addressed by the open source community.

It is hardly a major consumer issue.

Basically is says that certain apps are available on certain phones.

What is new about that?

The iPhone is a premium brand. And will remain so. Some Android phones maybe become premiums, others won't. The question of how the consumer base will react to the versions is hardly a foregone conclusion.

Also Google Android strategy seems, at least to me, not to be to sell phones, but to make it's server services available to a larger market. Driving the cost of smartphones down accomplishes this for them.
