No one EVER suggests cutting defense spending

That's not true, people suggest it all the time.

Occassionally, you'll see an article that China is increasing their military spending, but you never see in the article that even after, we still spend ten times more than they do.

If China was the only reason for the US having a military, and if military deterrence or conflict worked by the dollars canceling each other out leaving the one with more of them having a painless victory, than that would be a really important point.
