Re: "Okay, but it's also moving to the right..."
If you define "right" as SOCIALLY RIGHT (anti-gay, pro-involving religions into government, pro the idea that there is a 'religious war' or a 'social war' going on among the American population writ large) then I would have to say that I think there are increasing amounts of evidence that there is NOT an increased move toward "social right".
1) For one thing, the younger generations are increasingly more tolerant their their elders on social matters like these.
2) For another, many of the Tea Party organizations I have been reading about are actively trying to EXCLUDE all talk of 'culture wars' and divisive social issues such as right-to-life/abortion policy from their manifestos --- trying to narrow their political focus down SPECIFICALLY to Fiscal matters, deficit and budget and big government matters... not 'culture warfare'.
3) Finally, the libertarian movements such as the Ron Paul supporters (as was clearly pointed out in this article about CPAC that you replied to) have *long* been clearly OPPOSED to having the government mandating social policies such as that... preferring as a matter of course that such questions of individual behavior be left up to INDIVIDUALS themselves (or, failing that, to the various States.) The rule of thumb being 'the closer you get to the individual and the further away from a Big Brother Government dictating personal behaviors' the BETTER OFF you are.
So, IMO there are at least three reasons why America is NOT moving to a more "Socially Conservative Right". (In fact, I'd say we are moving in the other way....)
But I pray to God that we are finally moving to a more "Fiscally Conservative" viewpoint, and one that is more respectful of INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHTS then we have had before. (And I don't much care if you call that "Right" or call that "Left" or call that "Sky Blue" --- it's the principles that matter to me, not what you label them, or where you place them on a compass.) |
