U.S. imposes sanctions on Sudan

Reuters, Tuesday, November 04, 1997 at 12:56

WASHINGTON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - The United States has imposed
sweeping new sanctions on Sudan for alleged sponsorship of
terrorism, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright announced on
Tuesday.
"The United States has imposed sweeping new economic
sanctions against the government of Sudan because of its
continued sponsorship of international terrorism, its effort to
destabilize neighboring countries and its abysmal record on
human rights," Albright told a news briefing.
She said President Bill Clinton on Monday signed an
executive order under the International Emergency Powers Act
that calls for all Sudanese assets in the United States to be
blocked and imposes a ban on bank loans and all U.S. exports to
the country. Imports from Sudan also are banned.
"We take these steps because the government of Sudan has
failed to respond to repeated expressions of concern or to the
imposition of lesser sanctions," she said.
State Department spokesman James Rubin said the
administration hoped its pre-emptive move would make it
unnecessary for Congress to legislate sanctions. Sudan is
already on the U.S. list of seven nations Washington accuses of
sponsoring worldwide terrorism and having a terrible human
rights record.
