In Canada, paying somewhat higher taxes in order to guarantee that all citizens can afford healthcare, and that they will be supported if they become disabled, is considered to be a basic social contract. As an individual, she may never need the government's help, but she's happy to do her part so that those who do will have it. She really doesn't understand why people in this country are so resistant to that idea.
