"After all, why would Apple purge these adult-themed apps?" Why not! Another reason is so that parents can feel a little more comfortable giving their kids an iPhone, Touch or iPad. Sure they can still get smut from the Internet, but at least they are not downloading it directly from the Apple store. A fine but significant distinction for the Apple brand.
