This can’t be the whole story, because big health insurers are making boatloads of money. America’s five largest health insurers made a total profit of $12.2 billion last year; that was 56 percent higher than in 2008, according to a report from Health Care for America Now.

A totally insignificant, immaterial amount of money.

Writers of such stories capitalize on the fact that most Americans could not tell you how many zeroes are in a billion versus a trillion. In Reich's case, he clearly is using the ignorance of America to great advantage.

So, when Obama blows a trillion dollars his first month in office, no big deal. But when someone castigates the health insurance industry for making $12 Billion, they're criminals.

It is indicative of a problem. Why are health insurance costs spiraling out of control?

I suspect the government's involvement in health care over the last 45 years has more to do with it than anything else.

It is time we privatized Medicare and Medicaid and ended this nonsense.
