Hopefully they've both learned to fess up and fix rather than try to cover it over.

As you say, perception is extremely important.

Hopefully Toyota has opened up in time (and is correcting the internal problems).

Toyota blew this one for sure but that almost guarantees they won't do it again.

Problem for them is that they covered it up and not only were things like "company attitude" problems found, but (correct me if I'm wrong) in opening up there were some other problems uncovered. Chemical industry for the most part learned (a bit too late) covering up mistakes and problems makes the perception and other problems increase by orders of magnitude.

Interesting you mentioned Consumer Reports - they are a source, but like any source to take with a grain of salt and more research (as you do).

Until the past few years CR was been blasting Apple - even when they said something favorable about a Mac, they would usually include in their test (and list of products) one of the more expensive Mac models (or older one before a price drop) which would make the Mac look unfavorable compared to the PCs they listed, and of course there isn't any software or compatibility for Macs, so might as well buy a PC. Look at some old issues of CR. It wasn't until surveys were coming for a while that people were happy with reliability and service that they started giving the nod to Apple - it seemed at first reluctantly.

I will never forget, one fairly old issue they didn't give the Mac a good rating, and in that issue that had some "behind the scenes" pictures at CR and one of their rooms filled with computers, upon close examination....were Macs.
