Having the same general ideological or philisophical ideas to differing degrees does not imply or suggest cohesiveness. In fact it can at times result in less cohesiveness than people with totally different ideological ideas have. A "heretic" can draw more anger than an "infidel".

Also those differences of degree can be BIG differences of degree.

But I'm not 100% sure I agree with Lane. The Dems aren't just separated by how much you like big government. They have factions, like greens, and feminists, and multiculturalists. Still I'm not sure they are as directly opposing ideas as at least some of the more extreme versions of the Republican faction.

You can, contra to Lane's example have pro-life libertarians, but you can't be a libertarian if you think homosexuals should be locked up for life without committing any crime, and contraception of any form should be illegal. (OTOH its not like many people actually support such a position.)
