Panasonic and Rca Cut Dvd Prices
Consumer Electronics
Mon, Nov 03 1997

Street price of Panasonic DVD-A300 step-up player with built-in Dolby AC-3 decoder has been cut $100, National Mktg. Mgr. Rusty Osterstock said. Move responds to Nov. 1 price cuts imposed by Thomson on similarly featured Matsushita-sourced RCA and ProScan DVD players, Osterstock said. Thomson spokesman confirmed that street prices of RCA-brand RC5500P and ProScan PS8600P players will drop $100 to $599 and $649, respectively, although list pricing remains unchanged at $699 and $749. Thomson moved to broaden players' appeal among feature-conscious "early majority" consumers who are tier below early adopters in buying first-generation DVD technology, spokesman said. RC5500P and PS8600P also have built-in Dolby AC-3 decoders. Osterstock said Panasonic will use Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show to introduce 2nd-generation DVD models, but wouldn't say whether they would include player with built-in DTS decoder, as has been suggested. Osterstock said it hasn't been determined whether Panasonic will discuss Divx-featured DVD products at CES. Thomson also will introduce 2nd-generation DVD players at CES, said spokesman, and models will be sourced, presumably from Matsushita. Thomson also hasn't decided whether to discuss Divx at CES, spokesman said. Company earlier said it would introduce RCA and ProScan Divx players next year "of its own manufacture." Third Divx hardware licensee, Zenith, has said it expects to discuss Divx marketing plans before CES, presumably at new model introductions tentatively set for early Dec.
