However, Blu-ray seems to have better market penetration so far than any past ones, at least that I can recall. I see Blu-ray discs advertised and on sale everywhere these days, though prices still well exceed DVD.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something come along with high quality disks coupled with a 3-D scheme. Hollywood REALLY wants 3-D to work.... and is over-joyed after Avatar success.
