Here is where I disagree with that - Just as there are different flavors of Democrat (I'm a fan of Joe Lieberman), the Republicans are not as monolithic as they are sometimes described. For example, Scott Brown, Olympia Snow, Susan Collins, all seem very different than Jon Kyl or Mitch McConnell.

The idea that the Republicans have fantastic organization and are an undivided team of like minded people gives them a group an unrealistic amount of credit. I think there were Republican votes to peel off but some changes to the legislation would have been required. I used tort reform and buying insurance across state lines as examples because those are the ones that I heard about often. They seem like good ideas and including them would have, if nothing else, denied those talking points to the other side.

Maybe it had to be this way (I'm not sure) but a key piece of bad strategy was to allow the process to create two bills that basically can not be reconciled. Now it is not clear that Pelosi can get it out of her chamber.

I suspect that the "big bill" will be put up for a vote in the House and will now lose. Pelosi no longer has the votes. Murtha is dead, some people have switched sides in public, the abortion language is a problem, and some House members are now scared they can't win in November AND because they know that if the "big bill" goes down in flames, they will still have a chance to vote on a smaller bill and still declare that they did something.
