Your not too far off. Some of the late season Tropical Systems that run north merge with non tropical cold core systems and then the category goes from tropical to extra tropical only because Tropical Storms do not have associated fronts.Even if the wind speeds are still tropical strength the NHS drops the name. Now although rare, these extra tropical storms have brought snow to New England and even NYC. Also remember just because they loose their name and tropical characteristics Extra Tropical storms are known to bring death and destruction to Europe mostly in the form of flooding. They can still pack a punch just like any category Hurricane.
