It is astonishing.

I was looking today at the tables in the proposal. I couldn't find a verbal explanation on the Obama website, but it looked as though the government will pay 70% of the premiums for a family of four earning $88,000 a year. Even in the coastal areas, an adjusted gross income of $88,000 a year isn't shabby, is it? In the heartland that would be a very comfortable income level.

So this seems like a very generous subsidy to me. In fact, so generous that I don't know why employers would not discontinue offering health insurance to their employees. It would be a better deal for both the employee and the employer. The employer could shed the burden of the health care costs, pass 30% of the savings on to the employee in the form of higher salary. The employee would go into the private market on his own and buy a similar insurance package with the 30% increase in salary. (The govt. picks up the other 70%.) As an incentive, the employer could also give another 20% of the savings to the employee in the form of a better profit sharing formula, which wouldn't be taxable to the employee.

Everyone comes out ahead with the government picking up the tab.

Reality will hit sooner or later. We have met the enemy and he is us. If there's anyone left to write this chapter in the history books, it will be a sorry one.

I have to agree. The 'good ship lollipop' we're all on is just going to sink that much faster.
